In January I finally had the opportunity to go off-road with the Green Oval Guild. The Midwest’s premier Land Rover Club, the Green Oval Guild is a group of Land Rover enthusiasts who not only collect Rovers but take them off-road as well. Do I own a Land Rover? No. However, I was able to take my Jeep Wrangler to a special off-road event benefitting Will Battle, a local charity that supports veterans and first responders. I met the group of off-road enthusiasts at a property near Chillicothe, Ohio. There the Green Oval Guild hosted a breakfast during which they took donations for the charity.
Following our breakfast meal there was a brief driver meeting. Afterwards we split into groups to hit the trails with our 4x4s. I joined the group headed for the more challenging trails. During our drive to the first trail a few additional off-road rigs joined our convoy. The drive to the trail was fun an entertaining as we put our GMRS radios to use sharing dad jokes.
I had been following the Green Oval Guild on Instagram for a while and was looking forward to wheeling with them. Today it was finally happening, and I was not disappointed.
We spent the next few hours exploring some moderate 4×4 trails. Our off-road rigs got a little dirty. We found a mud hole that tried to swallow a Land Rover. Additionally, a challenging hill climb was too much for many of the rigs. However, the lone Ford Bronco made it up without much trouble. A few times, including the aforementioned mud hole, we had to use our winches and recovery gear.
What a great day! I made some new friends, had some fun off-road, and now my Jeep needed a bath. If you happen to be a Land Rover enthusiast and live close enough to participate in events, get in touch with the Green Oval Guild. They are a fun group of people who know what they are doing off-road. On top of that, they organize great events to raise donations for a worthwhile cause!
